Taking from the High Modernist precedent an understanding of the possibilities of form, Snyder chose to realize the expressive possibilities of color and gesture, often through the vocabulary of music, rather than to present their formal limitations. In the catalogue essay, exhibition curator Michael Walls discusses the historical precedent and current circumstances in which he considers Snyder to be one of the preeminent painters of her generation.
