R.H Quaytman’s ongoing “chapters”—installations of painted panels begun in 2001—explore formalist and conceptual variations of ideas about painting, as well as the poetic and grammatical possibilities of photography-based imagery. For her solo exhibition, Quaytman researched the history of the Renaissance Society from the 1970s and 80s, a time when the museum’s director, Susanne Ghez, was presenting important early exhibitions of conceptual art; during the year of exhibition, Ghez celebrated her 40th anniversary as Executive Director and Chief Curator.
The exhibition work on the front of the poster references Daniel Buren’s project Watch the Door Please (1980-1982) where Buren covered the doors of an entire Chicago Metra train fleet with stripes.
