Pope.L investigates how difference is demarcated economically, socially, culturally and politically, most prominently in the opposition between blackness and whiteness. With this Renaissance Society project, the artist furthered his exploration through multiple media, including drawings, sculpture and a major video installation.
The poster features exhibition artwork Sun (2013), a photograph of Pope.L’s son seen from the back, and the artist’s sketches for the installation. Forlesen marked the artist’s first solo exhibition in Chicago after moving to the city to join the faculty of the University of Chicago’s Department of Visual Arts.
