Mexico City-based artist Francis Alÿs has described his work as “a sort of discursive argument composed of episodes, metaphors, or parables, staging the experience of time in Latin America.” The artist’s solo Renaissance Society exhibition featured an animation, Bolero, along with the 511 graphite drawings made during the animation process, and Politics of Rehearsal, a 30-minute video that combines footage of a speech by President Truman, narration by critic Cuauhtémoc Medina, and a rehearsal for a striptease. These were presented in an ambitious two-story installation designed by the artist.
