In April 2023, Özgür Kar had an Intermissions program.

Özgür Kar’s artistic practice centers on inventive installations that feature eye-catching black-and-white animations. While honing his own style, Kar’s animations riff on traditions like medieval danse macabre, the experimental theater of Samuel Beckett, early animated films, 1990’s cartoons, Turkish folklore, and opera. As
he brings these older references into the present, Kar collapses high-brow and low-brow and balances comical and serious tones. This spring, the Ren will welcome Kar for his first major solo presentation in the United States. On the weekend of April 22-23, 2023, Kar will take over the Ren’s gallery with a newly commissioned installation that he is specifically conceiving for this space, as part of the museum’s
Intermissions series. Intermissions features innovative performance or time-based works, staged each fall and spring in our empty 3,000 square-foot neo-gothic gallery between exhibitions.

In Death and the Lover, Kar brings his animations off the screen onto a physical print. Here, as in his emotive, beautifully austere installations, Kar deals with death loneliness, isolation, desire, and belonging. Kar’s drawing practice offers the foundation of the digital animations that populate his installations. This drawing relates to Kar’s forthcoming work at the Ren, DAWN.
