Chicago has traditionally been an active hub for Outsider and Folk art, both as inspiration for mainstream artists, and as a recognized movement in its own right. In 1975 the Society put together this exhibition from the collection of Herbert W. Hemphill, Jr. Otherworldly visions, expressive machines, bathing beauties, penguins, trains, and nudist weddings are just a few of the fantastic inhabitants of these paintings, drawings and sculptures. This catalogue, produced in conjunction with the exhibition, includes an introduction to the work by author Phyllis Kind, who has worked with this material for three decades.
